Paul Simon and Sabrina Carpenter performed at the 50th anniversary celebration to celebrate "Saturday Night Live" with the duet from the song "Homeward Bound."

An 83 year old Simon was a regular presenter on "SNL 50" since its earliest episodes in 1975. He was on the show's inaugural episode following the attacks of 9/11. Simon was joined by 25-year-old pop star at the moment and carpenter.

"I was not born then," Carpenter stated laughing. "And neither were my parents," she said to get a bigger laughter.

Five years of "Saturday Night Live" sketches songs, special guests and sketches will be celebrated in celebration of the event's anniversary.

The popularity of pop culture has brought careers to generations of comedians from Bill Murray to Eddie Murphy and Tina Fey to Kristen Wiig.

Many of them attended "SNL50: The Anniversary Celebration," which aired in real-time from New York, of course.

"I grew up with the show, you know, and I was born in 1971 and it's lived with me my whole life," Amy Poehler, who was an actor from 2001 until 2008" spoke on Sunday in advance of the show's debut. "We have a show to do in just under two hours, and being back is an amazing privilege."

The three-hour show comes following months of celebrations surrounding "Saturday Night Live," which debuted on October.

"After the original cast, we were just going, Those guys just did it all for us," Adam Sandler, a cast member between 1990 and 1995, said prior to the production. "They took it to the next level. We watched the films at the house. They created their own films. We revered their movies. That's all. What we were looking to do was just sort of keep doing that things."

It's morphed into appointment TV throughout the years because the show has poked fun at the president, politics as well as pop culture, and has also served as a stage for some of the biggest music stars of today. Because streaming has changed the way we watch the way people watch TV, "SNL" sketches, host monologues, and short comedy films have remained very popular with social media and regularly receive million of hits on YouTube.
